Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Malaysia Lose 2-3 To South Korea

IPOH, April 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia lost 2-3 to South Korea in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Stadium here tonight.

The Koreans went ahead as early as the third minute when Lee Jung Jun found the mark.

The fans' hopes that Malaysia would repeat their feat against India yesterday dimmed when Lee Namyong made it two up for South Korea via a field goal in the 29th minute.

Only in the third quarter Malaysia rose up and succeeded in levelling terms when Faizal Saari and team captain Muhammad Razie Abdul Rahim scored in the 32nd and 34th minutes respectively.

However, a minute later, Malaysia's poor defence was punished when Shin Seok Kyo slammed home the winner from a penalty corner taken by Kim Youngjin.

Meanwhile, in earlier matches at the same venue, defending champions Australia notched their fourth successive victory when they defeated New Zealand 3-1 while India beat Canada 5-3.

Malaysia have lost to New Zealand (2-4) and Australia (2-3) but beat India 3-2 yesterday.

Malaysia must win against Canada this Saturday and hope India lose to Australia to qualify for the third/fourth place playoff.

Malaysia's coach Tai Beng Hai said overall he was satisfied with the players performance tonight,

"I think generally, it's ok. We managed to come back even though our players were very slow at the beginning," he said.
