No Happy Home Coming For Terengganu Rider Mohd Hariff

KUALA BERANG, March 11 (Bernama) -- Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) rider Mohd Hariff Salleh expressed disappointment at not finishing on the podium of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) Stage Four, regarded as his 'Home' race.

The 165.4km Stage Four which started in Kota Baharu ended in Kuala Berang, was again won by Italian rider Andrea Guardini in a bunch sprint while Terengganu-born Mohd Hariff finished a creditable sixth in the race that featured 125 riders.

"The race picked up momentum and pace at the final 5km, forcing riders to push themselves to the limit, including me and team mate Anuar Manan. But unfortunately, Anuar's bicycle suffered a puncture and I was left all alone to find my way through the pack.

"Normally Anuar will create the opening in the race for me to sprint ahead," said Mohd Hariff when met after the race.

Mohd Hariff who is a reputed Sprinter hoped he would be able to make up for today's disappointment in Stage Five over a 200km distance from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan, Pahang, tomorrow.

"It will be a long race and I will have to conserve as much energy as possible. If possible I want to finish on the podium tomorrow," he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Hariff's mother Esah Abdullah, 60, was glad that her son was able to finish among the top six riders although she would have been delighted to see her son finish on the podium.

"I'm happy that he (Mohd Hariff) finish in sixth place...May be not his day today but I hope he will have better luck tomorrow," said Esah who came from Kuala Terengganu to support her two sons, Mohd Hariff and Mohd Zamri Salleh who is also the TSG team captain.

In Stage Five tomorrow, the 125 riders will face three Sprint zones, namely in Dungun, Kertih and Chukai and one climb zone in Kijal.
