It was three years ago Joon-yeong finished second in Kuantan behind Italian Marco Canola but on Thursday, the KSPO rider made amends with by attacking the eight-man breakaway group inside the final 10km banner to claim victory in 4’18:47.

Indonesia rider Novardianto Jamalidin of Pegasus Cycling finished second while Adiq Husainie Othman of Terengganu Cycling Team brought some cheer to Malaysian fans as he finished third, both 13 seconds behind the South Korean.

Another Malaysian rider who was in the initial breakaway group, Loh Sea Keong, finished in eighth spot.

Australian rider Caleb Ewan of Orica GreenEdge retains the leaders yellow jersey as he crosses the finish line 13:30 behind the winner. None of the breakaway riders pose any threat to Ewan in the overall standings and Orica GreenEdge were happy to let them go with a maximum gap of 18 minutes.

Stage Six from Maran to Karak will be another flat one just over 97km and is expected to finish in a bunch sprint.
