Algerian Reguigui wins Le Tour de Langkawi

KUALA LUMPUR: Algerian rider Youcef Reguigui sealed the overall victory of the 20th edition of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) as Italian sprinter Andrea Guardini sprinted to his fourth stage victory at Dataran Merdeka on Sunday.

Reguigui of MTN Qhubeka took the leader’s yellow jersey after winning the penultimate stage up Fraser’s Hill on Saturday and finished the 96km stage from Kuala Kubu Baru to Dataran Merdeka on Sunday in 10th spot to seal the victory.

Guardini of Astana was no match for Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan of Orica GreenEdge as the Italian won by a bike length in 2’00:21. Ewan crossed the line for second place while Slovakian Michael Kolar of Tinkoff Saxo in third. All were credited with the same time.

Sunday’s stage win was the 18th for Guardini in five appearances since 2011.
It was an emotional win for 25-year-old Reguigui as it was his first professional overall win.
“I’m happy to win keep the jersey until today after a hard race … I’m just so happy right now,” said Reguigui who won the race with a total time of 28’12:04.

“I know the team is very happy with the yellow jersey and I want to thank all my team-mates who worked hard this week.”

Italian rider Valerio Agnoli of Astana moved up to second overall with a nine-seconds deficit to Regugui after winning some time bonuses in Sunday’s stage to pip Sebastian Henao of Team Sky to third, a further second down.
