KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Striker Mohd Faizat Ghazli's towering injury time header saw Malaysia clinch the 2015 Bangabandhu Gold Cup after a 3-2 victory over host Bangladesh in Dhaka, here Sunday night.
The win for Malaysia who were represented by the National Under-22 squad (Harimau Muda) that is coached by Razip Ismail, was the second in the tournament after the first win in 1996.
The final which kicked off at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh, saw both teams displaying attacking football that contributed five goals.
Malaysian skipper Nazirul Naim Che Hashim gave Malaysia a flying start with a clinically taken free kick in the 31st minute while lethal striker S. Kumaahran added the second in the 40th minute to ensure a 2-0 lead by halftime.
The home came out of the dressing room in fiery form and started firing from all angles before Jahid Hasan Ameli headed home in the 48th minute to reduce the deficit.
With the Malaysian defence reeling from the onslaught, Yeasin Khan headed in the equaliser six minutes later off a free kick from skipper Mohd Mamunul Islam.
Mohd Faizat however, had the last say when he rose majestically to nod home a corner by Muhammad Syazwan Andik Mohd Ishak in the final minute of the match.
Apart from Malaysia and Bangladesh, Thailand, Bahrain, Sri Lanka and Singapore took part in the tournament.
The victory was a major boost to Razip's boys who will be playing in the 2015 Singapore League (S-League) and Asian Football Confederation (2016 AFC Cup Under-23) Qualifier from March 27-31.
