SINGAPORE, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has climbed to 12th in world hockey ranking, up one rung from 13th which it occupied more than three years ago

(end 2011).

Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) senior vice president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said the last time Malaysia were ranked 12th was about five years ago.

"With this achievement, our chances of qualifying for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year seem brighter.

"However, it all depends on the players. Malaysia has shown improved performance from one match to another," he said after the match between Malaysia and Mexcio at Sengkang Hockey Stadium, Singapore, Thursday.

Malaysia beat Mexico 10-1 in the quarter-final match of the World Hockey League (WHL) Second Round 2015, from Jan 16 to 25.

Nur Azmi said this is the best opportunity for the players to show greater commitment for each other to ensure success for Malaysia.

Commenting on the WHL Second Round, Nur Azmi said Malaysia's main goal is to emerge champions and advanced to the WHL semi-final in Belgium or Argentina in June.

"There are seven vacancies (Olympics). We can qualify for the Olympics if our ranking improves later this year or by next year," he added.

According to the WHL championship format, the three best teams from this round will move into the WHL semi-final.

The six best teams will qualify for the Olympic Games, together with hosts Brazil and five continental champions.
