Ong Denies Embezzling Money

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) president Datuk Ong Poh Eng has denied newspaper reports that he had embezzled money.

He said the allegation was created by an individual who plans to tarnish his good image in the run up to the contest for the post of MWF president.

"Don't play dirty politics in sport as it will kill the sport. I am here to help weightlifting. I didn't expect the individual to accuse me without proof and call the media," he told a press conference at the National Sports Council (NSC) here, today.

The local media carried reports alleging that Ong had used RM30,000, given to the MWF by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), for personal interest.

Ong said the RM30,000 was as compensation after he used his own money to pay a USD15,000 (RM45,424) fine imposed by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) after the weightlifters failed doping tests.

"The weightlifters would have been suspended and could not participate in international tournaments if the fine was not paid."

Ong warned that he would not hesitate to take legal action against the individual responsible for making the allegation.
