Mohd Azlan Returns In Style

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Former world number 10, Mohd Azlan Iskandar, proved that he has still not lost any of his touch in international competition despite just coming back from his retirement.

The 32-year-old Mohd Azlan today defeated Kuwait's Ammar Altamimi in straight sets 11-4, 11-6, 11-1 in the first qualifying round of the men's division in the 2014 Malaysian Open squash championships.

In the qualifying rounds held at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil, Mohd Azlan took only 22 minutes to outclass Ammar.

"It was still a tough match though. However, I am excited to be playing again and looking forward to my next match," said the Sarawakian, who will once again don the "Malaysia Hero" jersey at the Incheon Asian Games in South Korea next month.

He will face South Africa's Shaun Le Roux tomorrow for a place in the main draw.

Besides Mohd Azlan, two other Malaysian players -- Valentino Bon Jovi Bong and Adden Idrakie -- also booked their berth in the second qualifying round tomorrow.

Valentino beat Matthew Karwalski of Australia 11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 6-11, 11-7 while Addeen also had to face a gruelling match against compatriot Elvinn Keo before winning 11-8, 11-9, 12-14, 8-11, 11-6 in a match that lasted for an hour and 10 minutes.

In the women's category, no Malaysian women made it through from the qualifiers.

The first round matches of the main draw for the women category starts tomorrow with world number one, Datuk Nicol David, who is gunning for her ninth Malaysian Open title facing a qualifier from Hong Kong, Liu Tsz Ling.
