Malaysia Face Uphill Task After Being Drawn In Group Of Death

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is expected to face an uphill task in its quest to win the Asean Football Federation (2014 AFF Suzuki Cup) after being drawn in the same group as defending champion Singapore and three-time winner Thailand.

In the AFF Suzuki Cup to be jointly hosted by Singapore and Vietnam from Nov 22 to Dec 20, Malaysia have been drawn in Group B with Singapore, Thailand and a yet to be decided qualifier.

The draw which was telecast live from Hanoi, Vietnam today through AFF website www.aseanfootball.org, 2008 champion Vietnam head Group A with four-time runner-up Indonesia, the Philippines and a yet to be decided country that plays in a qualifier.

The qualifier which offers two slots in a round-robin format, will feature host Laos, Timor Leste, Brunei, Cambodia and Myanmar while the top two teams advance to the main draw and slotted into Group A and B.

During the AFF Suzuki Cup competition, Vietnam will host Group A matches and Singapore play host for Group B matches while the top two teams in each group move into the semifinal stage.

The final will be played on a home and away format, just like previous years.

For the record, Singapore has won the title a record four times (1998, 2004 when the competition was known as the Tiger Cup), 2007 and 2012 while Thailand clinched the title in 1996, 2000 and 2002.

Malaysia lifted the inaugural AFF Suzuki Cup in 2010 when it was jointly hosted by Indonesia and Vietnam and emerged runner-up in 1996, losing 0-1 to Thailand.

The National squad coached by Dollah Salleh is currently in Tajikistan, to play a friendly match against the country's National team, on Friday.
