Decision To Drop Dharma Not Appropriate, Says Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The decision to drop Muhammad Dharma Raj Abdullah as the hockey national chief coach with the 2014 Asia Games in Incheon South Korea just around the corner, is inappropriate, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar.

He said it was not that he was unsupportive of the move but the decision of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) was not ideal as there was less than 40 days before the Asia Games.

"Dharma may have identified the strengths and weaknesses of the squad. The loss at the Commonwealth Games was not the reason Dharma was ousted as as there was no target for the squad.

"I think it is related to other issues. I hope other sport associations do not emulate MHC over such matters," he told reporters after handing over the national flag to the Youth Olympics contingent here today.

Meanwhile, on the crisis in the Badminton of Malaysia (BAM), Khairy urged its president Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff and National Chief Coach Rashid Sidek to solve the problem in a face-to-face meeting and not via the press.

He said BAM should have a consensus in making a decision more so with the the World Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark on Aug 25 and Asia Games in Inchon, South Korea next month.

"BAM must decide, I can only suggest that BAM decide and inform the Chief Coach the plans for the World Championship. Whatever crisis, a decision can be made but not via the media. Call the coach and discuss face-to-face," he said.

In the meantime, during the talk with Rashid this morning, Khairy said he was told by Rashid the latter had not made any decision to resign.

"I said don't resign, continue and we will try to solve the problem with BAM. Still, I had to contact the coach, which is not the usual thing in any country.

"I received a call from Tan Sri Elyas Omar urging me to intervene in the BAM crisis. It is not a minister's duty to contact a coach but this is what is happening in Malaysia," he said.

BAM deputy president Datuk Mohamad Norza Zakaria had said Rashid should join the national contingent to the World Cup this time as his services were still needed.
