NSC Happy With Performance Of Back Up Squad Athletes

KANGAR, June 4 (Bernama) -- The 17th Perlis SUKMA which ended Wednesday saw an all round improvement in the performance of back up squad athletes who accounted for 40 per cent of the 389 gold medals offered.

National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said back up squad athletes won 160 of the 389 gold medals from the 24 sports contested.

He added that apart from winning gold medals. back up squad athletes were also responsible for setting 17 of the 48 new SUKMA records.

Zolkples said the overall performance of athletes in the SUKMA hosted by Perlis also saw an improvement in the number of new National and SUKMA records since five new National records were set compared with the 2012 edition in Pahang where only three National marks were set.

"We will conduct a post-mortem to evaluate the performances of all back up squad athletes and to identify those who can be absorbed into the National elite squad," he told reporters at the Main Press Centre situated in the Tuanku Syed Putra Sports Complex, here.

He added that there was a possibility that some may be send to bigger international events like the SEA Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

Zolkples was also happy to note that medals in the Perlis edition were evenly distributed and the gap between teams was closer compared to previous games.
