KANGAR, June 3 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin hinted that the cost of organising Sukma might be reduced in the future since all states have enough infrastructure.
"The organising cost may be reduced for future editions since every state has enough venues to stage the Sukma and no new infrastructure need to be build new stadiums.
"We (Ministry of Youth and Sports) will only offer states that can organise the Sukma within the budget allocated by the Federal government. I do not expect the expenditure to cost what we had spent to host the Sukma in Perlis," he told reporters after watching the Sukma hockey final at the Tuanku Syed Putra Sports Complex, here Tuesday.
According to Khairy, RM120 million was spent to organise the Sukma that was hosted by Perlis because many new sports infrastructure had to be build in the state.
"The cost of building new infrastructure alone reached RM70 million but that money was spent not only for the Sukma but to provide sporting facilities to Perlis as an initiative to develop sports.
"All venues and facilities like the aquatic complex, hockey pitch and badminton hall plus the upgrading of the Utama Stadium would leave a legacy after the Sukma," he said.
He said when Sarawak hosts the Sukma in two years time, existing venues in the state would be used.
"I was informed that Sarawak will use all its existing venues to host the Sukma in 2016, except the aquatic centre which will be a new addition but the budget had already been allocated by the state government," he said.
