KANGAR, May 26 (Bernama) -- The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail said sports is the best platform to forge unity without any feeling of prejudice or differences.
According to him, the organiser of the 2014 17th Malaysia Games (Sukma) should make the championship the best avenue to promote and strengthen solidarity among competing athletes.
"I want to tell all to compete healthily. If one is unsuccessful, it does not mean one loses forever. Consider it as not our time to win," said Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin when opening Sukma XVII at the Sports Complex here tonight.
Also present were the Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tuanku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid, the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra as well as the Raja Puan Muda, Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.
Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim were also present.
In conjunction with opening, he also declared that the launching venue of the Games at the main stadium in the Sports Complex was given the name Tuanku Syed Putra Stadium.
The biennial event which started on Saturday and ends on June 4 is participated by all states as well as Brunei, which sent a 35-member contingent.
The 2014 Perlis Sukma is being competed in 24 events by more than 6,000 athletes.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said athletes and officials should compete in the spirit of sportsmanship.
He said he hoped the athletes would adapt themselves with the environment and weather of Perlis and create new national records in their respective events.
The Games was opened in a colourful ceremony with fireworks, accompanied by music played by a 60-member Police Brass Band led by by ASP Rahmatullah Khan Mohamed Hanifah to entertain spectators.
