National U-16 Squad To Compete At 2014 ACT Football Tournament

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- The national under-16 (U-16) football squad will be competing at the inaugural 2014 Asian Under-16 Champions Trophy 2014 (ACT) which begins this Saturday.

Frenz United Football Club (FUFC), the organiser of the tournament, in a statement, said the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) who declined to allowed the team to compete due to their tight schedule, had finally agreed to give the green light.

FAM secretary general, Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin had said that through the team's involvement in the tournament, it will give the opportunity to the players to sharpen their skills in the international arena.

He also noted that the tournament was an ideal training ground for youth players to compete with each other, not only to cultivate their football skills but also building lifelong friendships with individuals of similar interest from around the region.

Sharing Hamidin's view was the FUFC President, Datuk Noor Ihsan A. Hamid who said the participation of S. Balachandran's side will benefit the squad as they gear up for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Championship which will be held in Thailand, this September.

Twelve teams will be vying for top honours in the tournament which offers US$100,000 (RM322,628) as the winner's purse and also a trophy.

The upgraded version of the 2013 edition will be held over a four-month period starting from 17 May until 30 August and will be played in 11 stadiums across the Asian continent in a home and away format.
