National Rugby Squad Aim To Join Division 1 Of A5N

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) - The national rugby squad are aiming to gain promotion to Division 1 in the HSBC Asian Five Nations Championship (A5N) in Doha, Qatar.

The three-day championship starts on May 20.

Malaysian Rugby Union (MRU) president, Datuk Wira Amiruddin Embi said the squad wanted to redeem their defeat to Thailand and Singapore at the previous two editions of the A5N.

"We long to win after suffering those losses despite Malaysia having a good quality team, and this time we aim to join the countries in Division 1.

"For now, Malaysia are ranked second behind Thailand in Division 2, followed by Iran and Qatar in third and fourth positions respectively," Amiruddin told a press conference at Wisma OCM here Thursday.

Meanwhile, national head coach Lee Yuk Fah said that the team will work to improve on past weaknesses to ensure success in the upcoming tournament.

"From what we have seen before in the past few years, we lost due to lack of focus and lack of discipline, so for this time, we have learned from history and will play hard and at the same time play smart to face our opponents." he said.

He added that although Thailand are the top ranked team in Division 2, Qatar were also a force to be reckoned with and seen as one of the biggest opponents.

"Of course on paper, Thailand are considered as number one but in the actual scenario, I would say that Qatar are one of the favourites because they are a very strong team with an excellent track record, and most of the players are all professionals." said Lee.

The team, consisting of 25 players and five officials, is scheduled to depart for Doha, Qatar on Monday and will face their first opponent, Iran, the next day.
