MELAKA, May 11 (Bernama) -- Melaka is aiming for 25 out of the 356 gold medals being vied at 17th Malaysia Games (Sukma) that will be held in Perlis from May 24 to June 2.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said among the events that had high potentials for Melaka to grab golds were wushu, archery, sailing, silat, cycling, athletics, golf and badminton.
"I believe our athletes can achieve the target based on our encouraging performance at the 13th Sukma here in 2010 when we took home 32 gold medals," he said when speaking at the handing over of the Melaka state flag to Melaka chef-de-mission Datuk Ab Rahaman Ab Karim here Sunday.
He said the state government proposed that remuneration be given to the state medalists with the team events receiving RM10,000 for gold medals, RM5,000 (silver) and RM3,000 (bronze).
Melaka will send 293 athletes to take part in 21 sports events at the meet, including 36 for hockey, 23 for athletics and 22 for silat.
