Malaysia Eliminated From 2014 AFC Futsal Championship

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia were knocked out of the 2014 AFC Futsal Championship after losing 2-3 to Chinese Taipei in their final Group C match at the Ton Duc Thang University Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam today.

The defeat saw Maizal Hairi Marzuki's side fail to book their berth in the quarter-final after managing to collect three points out of three games.

Thailand and Lebanon cruised into the quarter-final despite both sides drawing 3-3 in another group match held at the Phu Tho Stadium, Ho Chi Minh City.

Chinese Taipei who are already eliminated from the competition, took the lead through Chang Hao-Wei in the 14th minute before skipper, Huang Cheng-Tsung strengthened their lead, three minutes later.

Mohd Asmie Amir Zahari reduced the deficit for the national side in the 20th minute, only to see the opponent team add their third goal through Weng Wei-Pin's strike in the 26th minute.

Muhamad Fitri Muhamad Yatim netted another goal for the national side in the 29th minute but it was too late to halt Chinese Taipei from clinching their first victory in the competition.

Maizal Hairi said his boys played well but failed to find an equalizer after trailing 2-3 to Chinese Taipei in the second half.

"We all take responsibility for this loss. The players made mistakes but in this type of competition, when you make one mistake, it means your opponent scores. Overall, we are satisfied with our performance at this championship," he was quoted in the AFC website; www.the-afc.com.

The results also extended Malaysia's barren run in the competition as they never made it to the quarter-final since 1999.
