A Record 56,000 Sign Up For Penang Bridge Int'l Marathon Four Months Before Closing Date

GEORGE TOWN, May 15 (Bernama) -- The 2014 Penang Bridge International Marathon to be held at the Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah bridge for the first time on Nov 16, has already surpassed last year's record of 46,000 since 56,000 runners have already confirmed their participation.

State Tourism and Culture committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said the overwhelming response may break all records and reach the 80,000 mark by the Sept 30 closing date.

"We are also targeting 30,000 participants for the 10km Fun Run because 15,000 have registered," he told reporters here Thursday.

He said the prestigious run had also gained recognition and entry in the Malaysia Book of Records as the biggest bridge run for the fourth consecutive time.

Law said in conjunction with the sixth edition of the run, a free running clinic would be held on June 15 at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.

The marathon will feature five categories, namely the men's and women's full marathon (42.195km); men's and women's half marathon (21km); men's and women's 10km run, Junior 10km (13-17 years) and Fun Run.

The closing date for entries is Sept 30 and those interested can surf the event website www.penangmarathon.gov.my or contact 016-4110000 for more information.
