Mixed Performance By M'sian Shuttlers In India Open

NEW DELHI, April 2 (Bernama) -- It was a mixed performance by the Malaysian shuttlers on the second day of the Yonex Sunrise-BWF Metlife India Open Super Series badminton championships at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, here.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei booted out India's K. Ajay Kumar 21-9, 21-9.

"I am taking the India Open lightly as I don't want to have any injury, given that there are many more games to play this year. Nevertheless, I will try my best to defend the title," Lee told reporters after the match.

He said participating in the India Open this year would enable him to train for the Thomas Cup, to be held here next month.

"I have a lot of fans here. Therefore, it is interesting to come to the India Open," he added.

Malaysia's mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Lai Pei Jing beat Japan's Hayakawa Kenichi/Matsutomo Misaki 21-15, 8-21 and 23-21, but another pair Abdul Khalid Mohd Lufti Zaim/Soong Fie Cho lost to Indonesia's Kido Markis/Bernadeth Pia Zebadiah 17-21, 11-21.

Men's doubles pair Goh V Shem/Lim Khim Wah thrashed India's Manu Attri/R.Sumeeth Reddy 21-19, 21-19 while another Malaysian pair Ow Yao Han/Tan Boon Heong lost to Denmark's Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen 17-21, 14-21.

The third Malaysian pair Hoon Thien How/Tan Wee Kiong lost to China's Kang Jun/Liu Cheng team 6-21, 18-21, while the fourth pair Abdul Latif Mohd Zakry/Mohd Tazari Mohd Fairuzizuan gave a walkover to Japan's Kamura Takeshi/Sonodo Keigo.

In the men's singles, Chong Wei Feng lost to Japan's Sasaki Sho 12-21, 21-15 and 21-19.

The Malaysian women's doubles pair Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei beat Thailand's Muenwong Phataimas/Ostermeyer Kilasu 21-17, 21-8. However, another doubles pair Amelia Alicia Anscelly/Soong Fie Cho lost to Korea's Jung Kyung Eun/Kim Ha Na 7-21, 17-22.
