SINGAPORE OPEN: Lowly ranked Santoso shocks World No 1IT was supposed to be an easy match for Lee Chong Wei. But his opponent, Simon Santoso proved to be no "Simple Simon" as he stunned the World No 1 21-15, 21-10 in the Singapore Open men's singles final yesterday.
Despite having beaten Simon nine times in 10 meetings, Chong Wei found himself outclassed by the Indonesian World No 52 in 48 minutes.
Simon, who had to go through the qualifying rounds, stunned everyone at the Singapore Indoor Stadium with a commanding display against the top seed to claim the first prize of US$22,500 (RM73,000).
"I was very nervous at the beginning, but it has been a long time since I last defeated Chong Wei," said Simon.
"I'm very happy with the support I got from the fans and I hope to continue improving after this win."
Chong Wei, who won the India Open last Sunday, had only himself to blame for the loss, having committed too many unforced errors in the match.
Coach Tey Seu Bock said: "First of all, we must give credit to Simon for playing really well today. Nobody would have expected this result.
"It just wasn't Chong Wei's day. Nothing worked for him and he made too many mistakes."
The 31-year-old Chong Wei will have to prove that the Singapore setback was just a hiccup and he will be back in top gear for the Thomas Cup finals in New Delhi next month.
Meanwhile, Malaysia got off to a fine start in the individual events of the World Junior Championships in Alor Star yesterday.
Apart from girls' doubles Raja Nunina Raja Azlan Shah-Yap Zhen who lost 12-21, 17-21 to South Korea's Park Keun Hye-Yoon Min Ah, the rest of the Malaysian players cleared the first round. The men's doubles first round will begin today.
