Malaysian Open: Liu Ying Battles Pain To Put Mixed Doubles Pair Into Second Round

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- Despite sustaining injuries on both her knees, national mixed doubles player, Goh Liu Ying fought on with her partner, Chan Peng Soon to advance to the second round of the 2014 Malaysian Open Super Series championship.

The national mixed doubles pair took one hour to defeat Muhammad Rijal and Vita Marissa of Indonesia 23-21, 17-21 and 21-10 in the first round today at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil here.

Peng Soon /Liu Ying will meet Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto of Indonesia who beat another national mixed doubles pair, Tan Aik Quan/Lai Pei Jing, 21-14, 21-13.

"Today we deployed a new strategy to reduce the pain in my knees and it paid off," Liu Ying told reporters afterwards.

Liu Ying, 24, who sustained a meniscus wound on her right knee and ligament tissue tear on both knees, said she just focused on the game to forget the pain.

Meanwhile, the national mixed doubles pair of Ong Jian Guo/Lim Yin Loo were also through to the second round after beating Phillip Chew/Jamie Subandhi of the United States, 25-23, 21-12.

Jian Guo/Yin Loo will meet Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam of Thailand tomorrow.
