Khairy Wants Contractors To Expedite Works On Sukma Sports Venues

KANGAR, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin wants all contractors involved in building or upgrading sport venues for the 17th Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Perlis this year to expedite their work.

He said he was giving them until the end of March or early April as each venue involved had to be tested to ensure it is safe.

However, Khairy also reminded contractors not to hurriedly finish their projects at the expense of quality and safety.

He was speaking to reporters after making a working visit to inspect the contruction and upgrading of sports venues for the Sukma at the state sports complex here today.

During the visit, he was briefed on the Sukma project development by Perlis Sukma secretariat deputy chief executive officer Saiful Rizal Mohd Shukri at the State Sports Council in Kampung Pondok here.

According to Khairy, overall, construction was satisfactory except for work at the swimming pool and badminton hall.

"Construction of the badminton hall is not difficult as it is just a normal hall but the swimming pool may not meet the target date as it requires further checks," he said.

Khairy did not rule out the possibility of holding the aquatic events in Kedah if the facility could not be completed on time.

He said a final decision on the capability of Perlis to get the venue ready would be made soon as should the sport be held in Kedah, the state will still need to to touch up its swimming pool as well.

According to him, the ministry was providing an allocation of RM122 million to Perlis to host the Sukma of which RM76 million was for infrastructural development and RM46 million for management.

On the security of athletes, he directed all parties to give priority on the matter so that the case of an athlete being raped in the 16th Sukma in Kuala Lumpur was not repeated.
