Athletics Contribute Three More Gold Medals For Malaysia

NAYPYITAW, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- After Hemala Devi Eni Kutty displayed an excellent gold performance at the 7th Asean Para Games earlier today, the national athletic squad continued to deliver three more gold medals for Malaysia.

The campaign to achieve the 27-gold target had been fruitful so far as Muhammad Hafiz Abu Bakar bagged the gold medal in the men's F37/f36 discus event after throwing a distance of 36.48 metres.

"I'm really satisfied with the distance I made. It's better than my performance at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix in the United Arab Emirates in March last year where I only manage to throw a distance of 33.72 metres," he told Bernama.

Muhammad Hafiz, who is participating for the third times at the Asean Para Games, would also contest in the men's shot put and javelin events.

"I'm not really good in the javelin event as I focus more on the shot put event. My target is to break my best personal record of 11.60 metres in the shot put event," he said.

The other two gold medals in athletics were delivered by Mohd Faizal Aideal Suhaimi (men's 100m T12) and Nasharuddin Mohamad (men's 100m T20).

Meanwhile, Malaysia also bagged one gold medal, one silver and one bronze medals through table-tennis.

Mohd Azwar Bakar-Chee Chao Ming managed to defeat Samee Sukij-Sillapong Bunpot from Thailand 11-9, 11-7, 8-11 and 11-7 to win the gold medal in the men's doubles category.

Malaysia also bagged the bronze medal in the event through Tan Wei Wern-Yap Moo On.

The silver medal in table-tennis was delivered by Mohd Azwar after losing 10-12, 5-11, 11-8 and 7-11 to Seronio Isalas from Philippine in the final of men's singles category.

After completing the first day of the 7th Asean Para Games, Malaysia collected a total of six gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
