Sukma 2016: Sarawak To Build World Class Facilities

SIBU, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak state government is now actively making early preparations to provide world standard sports infrastructure as host of the 2016 Malaysia Games (Sukma).

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said some of the facilities were under construction while several more were still under proposal.

According to him, an aquatics centre will be built at Betong while an additional astroturf hockey pitch is under construction at the Petra Jaya Sport Complex in Kuching.

"The world standard Kuching Aquatics Centre under construction at Petra Jaya Sports Complex is expected to be ready by 2015. Several more sports facilities will be upgraded and improved to meet the conditions and regulations of the organiser.

"What we hope to see soon is a sports village complete with sports facilities, athletes hostel, administration centre such as sports institute, sports corporation office and other related facilities," he said.

He said this in his speech delivered by State Assistant Communications and State Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin at the 2011/2012 Starawak State Sports Awards here yesterday.
