Nicol Just A Step Away From Maiden Carol Weymuller Open Title

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysian squash queen and world number one Datuk Nicol David is just a step away from clinching her maiden Carol Weymuller Open title after cruising into the final, Sunday.

In the semi-finals held at the Heights Casino in Brooklyn, New York, United States, early Sunday, the 29-year-old Penangite easily dispatched Egyptian third seed, Raneem El Weleily 11-8, 11-7, 11-4.

On her victory, Nicol said she was happy to register such an easy win against the Egyptian whom she regarded as among the toughest opponent in any tournament.

"Good, I mean to beat Raneem, 3-0 is a huge deal! It came together at the right time and I want to bring that through to the final, tomorrow," she was quoted as saying in the tournament website www.squashsite.co.uk.

Nicol however, could face a tricky final against unheralded player Camille Serme after the Frenchwoman continued her sensational run in the tournament by knocking out second seed, Laura Massaro of England 12-10, 11-6, 11-4 in another semi-final encounter.

For the record, Nicol has not won the tournament after losing in the semi-finals in 2009 and quarter-finals, last year.

She did not compete in 2010 and 2011.
