Tragic Accident At SIC Not Due To Lack Of Safety - SIC

SHAH ALAM, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- The tragic road accident at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) last weekend which resulted in the death of a flag marshal and a teenage superbike rider was not due to lack of safety on the circuit, said SIC Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Razlan Razali.

Razlan said based on reports made to the Federation of International Motorcycling (FIM), the marshal had followed the flag waving protocol when the incident occurred.

"According to race steward, it was just a race incident and not due to lack of safety (on the circuit) or the mistake on the part of the rider," he told reporters after attending the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd and SIC for the Shell Advance Malaysian MotoGP 2013, here Thursday.

During the incident on Saturday, superbike rider Muhammad Izzat Mohd Abdul Hakim, 17, crashed into race marshal Satish Suppiah at about 12.30pm during a practice session.

Satish died at the spot while Muhammad Izzat, who had participated in the SIC Ninja Cup programme this year, died on Wednesday at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital after succumbing to serious injuries suffered during the accident.

Razlan said he was still awaiting response from the relevant authorities whether to review the flag waving protocol for the prestigious motorsport event.

On the Malaysian MotoGP, Razlan said he was expecting a turnout of more than 130,000 spectators for the three-day event which starts on Oct 11 and 80,000 alone for the final day of the race.

"We have sold more than 83 per cent of the tickets for the race so far," he added.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd, Zohari Sulaiman said Rapid Bus will provide a special service from the city and Kuala Lumpur International Airport Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) to the SIC for the MotoGP race.

He said tickets for the bus services were on sale beginning Sept 17, with pick-up points at the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), KL Sentral and LCCT.

"Rapid Bus is also providing free shuttle services within the circuit for spectators," he said.
