Malaysia Loses Potential Gold Medal As Top Karate Exponent Floored By Injury

PALEMBANG, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia lost a potential gold medal for the first day of the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games when karate gold medal hopeful, Ricky Leong Tze Wai could not be fielded Monday after sustaining a serious injuries in his left hand during training Sunday morning.

Chef-de-Mission Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Tan Sri Omardin said he was upset upon receiving the news but was still optimistic of meeting the target as there were other medal hopefuls in karate.

"I refused to field Ricky tomorrow as he had nine stitches from the injury and he is now resting in his room," he told Bernama.

Megat Zulkarnain said Ricky would be replaced by Lim Chee Wei who would be fielded in the men's individual and men's team categories tomorrow.

"I believe Lim is capable and hope he will try to contribute the first gold medal tomorrow as a gift for Ricky," he said.

He also told all other athletes to be cautious when undergoing training so that such incidents did not recur.

Malaysia is targeting to win three gold medals in Palembang, namely in swimming, wushu and karate.
