Islamic Solidarity Games Opens Amidst Colourful Presentation Of Tradition, Heritage And Culture

PALEMBANG, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono tonight officially opened the Islamic Solidarity Games at the Jakabaring Stadium in Palembang amidst vibrant and colourful displays of heritage and culture.

The 11-day sporting gala that features participation from 44 Islamic countries who are affiliated to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The opening ceremony which started at 6.15pm, kicked off with a traditional music presentation from marching bands from local schools before the "One World" theme song.

The Malaysian contingent comprising 80 athletes and officials was led by Chef-de-mission Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Tan Sri Omardin while Mohd Hatta Mahamut was the flag bearer.

Malaysia with a 136-member contingent will compete in 10 of the 13 sports contested, namely swimming, athletics, badminton, beach volleyball, karate, taekwondo, tennis, weightlifting, archery and wushu.

Malaysia failed to qualify for football, indoor volleyball and basketball.

The second Islamic Solidarity Games scheduled in Tehran, Iran, in 2010 was cancelled due to a dispute between the host country and Saudi Arabia over the use of the name "Persian Gulf".
