Terengganu Continue To Top Medal Tally Despite Winning Only One Gold Medal Today

KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Bernama) -- Defending champion Terengganu continued their dominance on the eighth day of the 16th SUKMA held here, by remaining at the top of the medal tally for the third consecutive day, despite winning only one gold medal today.

Terengganu has 17 gold, 11 silver, 19 bronze medals against FT's 12 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze while Selangor are third place with 12 gold, 10 silver and 21 bronze medals.

In today's competition, Terengganu collected its only gold medal from women's Beach Football after beating Sabah 6-5 at the Morib Beach field in Banting.

Federal Territory (FT) also picked up one gold medal through the men's Kabbadi while Selangor won the women's Kabbadi at the Bukit Jalil Sports School hall.

FT beat Selangor 16-14 in the men's category while Selangor took the women's gold by beating FT 4-2.

Negeri Sembilan showed its prowess by emerging as a new powerhouse in Synchronized swimming by sweeping three gold medals while Melaka strengthened its position in water polo by adding the men's and women's gold medals.

Melaka who had already won the women's water polo gold earlier, beat arch rival Negeri Sembilan 14-5 at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil.

Negeri Sembilan also ruled the Silambam venue when it won two gold medals while Kedah came into the picture by winning two gold medals as well.

In Silambam action, held at the National Sports Council Gymnasium 1, National exponents M. Silambarasi and M. Indrajith ruled the women's 30-45kg Special Thanithiramai category and men's 30-55kg Special Thanithiramai category, respectively.

Kedah exponents S. Kaviarasi won the women's Special Thanithiramai (46-55kg) while R. Prakash added the men's category gold in the (56-75kg).

Tomorrow, only two gold medals are on offer in the men's and women's table tennis competition.
