Malaysia's Medal Drought Ends As Shuttlers Contribute Three Bronze


KAZAN, (Russia), July 11 (Bernama) -- Shuttlers brought three cheers to the Malaysian contingent participating in the World University Games (Universiade) by winning three bronze medals in badminton.

The three bronze medals came through Iskandar Zulkarnain in the men's singles, Loh Wei Sheng/Jagdish Singh in the men's doubles and Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean in the women's doubles.

In the men's singles semifinals that was played at the Tennis Academy courts in Kazan Wednesday, Iskandar lost to Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk from Thailand 9-21, 11-21 while Loh/Jagdish lost to the top seeded South Korean pair Lee Yongdae/Ko Sungyun 14-21, 21-8.

Chow-Lee also suffered a similar fate when they were defeated 17-21, 9-21 by South Korea's Chang Ye Na/Kim Soyoung.

The competition awards losing semifinalists with bronze medals.
