Germany Beat Malaysia 4-3 To Win Bronze In Hockey

KAZAN, (Russia) July 15 (Bernama) -- Germany dashed Malaysia's hopes of winning at least a bronze medal in the World University Games (Universiade) with a 4-3 victory in a match for third-fourth placing at the Field Hockey Center, here, Monday.

The defeat was a bitter blow to Malaysia who had hoped to win at least a bronze medal in the Universiade.

The Germans took an early lead when Matthias Knuepfer scored in the 2nd minute but two minutes before half-time Malaysia managed to equalise through Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Abdul Jalil.

The second half saw Malaysia put up a better display and even took the lead in the 48th minute through a penalty corner strike by skipper Mohammad Razie Abdul Rahim.

Germany however, managed to equalise in the 55th minute with a clinical field goal by Anton Ebeling while Timm Haase made it 3-2 in favour of the Germans in the 57th minute.

Malaysia fought back gamely and made it 3-3 with yet another penalty corner strike by Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin in the 64th minute but Jonas Furste punished a lapse in concentration in the very last minute of the match to ensure a 4-3 victory for the Germans.

Host Russia and France will face each other in the gold medal deciding match.

Barring any upsets, Russia are the favourite to win the gold.
