THE unthinkable happened.Malaysia failed to recover from disastrous start by men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, losing 3-2 to Tawan in the Sudirman Cup at Putra Stadium yesterday.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong's shocking loss to scratch pair Lee Sheng Mu-Tsai Chia Hsin put a lot of pressure on Sonia Cheah, who was making her Sudirman Cup debut in the women's singles.
Sonia lost 21-17, 21-13 to Tai Szu Ying, the same player whom the Malaysian beat twice in the Axiata Cup.
Lee Chong Wei duly delivered a point for Malaysia in the men's singles in the mixed team event, beating Yang Chih Hsun 21-8, 21-13.
But women's doubles Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei, having to save the tie, buckled under pressure and fell 21-17, 21-19 to Cheng Wen Hsing-Hsieh Pei Chen as Taiwan took an unassailable 3-1 lead.
A disheartened Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying made it 2-3 with a 25-23, 21-11 win over Lu Ching Yao-Lai Chia Wen in the mixed doubles.
Chong Wei said: "I didn't expect Kien Keat-Boon Heong to lose and it was not their normal game today. However, all is not lost and we have to regroup and beat Germany to reach the last eight."
"Kien Keat-Boon Heong's defeat shifted the pressure to Sonia as she was playing in the Sudirman Cup for the first time."
