2013 Tour Of Malaysia Postponed From May To June

KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) has reschedule the 2013 Tour of Malaysia from May to June, in view of the forthcoming 13th General Election (GE13), and polling day on May 5.

The Tour of Malaysia, the oldest cycling event, that was initially scheduled from May 7 to 11, has now been fixed for June 26 to 30.

"The decision was made following the International Cycling Union's (UCI) request to host all cycling events from June 17 to 30," MNCF deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad told Bernama. here, Thursday.

Earlier, the Tour of Borneo was also rescheduled from April 26-30 to Aug 22-26, after receiving the green light from the UCI.

Naim said the MNCF had appealed to reschedule the date of the Tour of Malaysia (May 7) since the 13th General Election would have just ended on May 5.

"I had also received feedback from the police since the issue of security must be taken into account after the GE13. On the advise of the police we have decided to change the date," said Naim who is also the Tour's chief of operations.

He added that the Tour which was initially decided to be held over six stages would be reduced to five stages covering a distance of 863.4km instead of 1,015.4km.

The first stage will kick off from the National Sports Council (NSC) in Bukit Jalil to Rembau, Negeri Sembilan (187.7km) followed by Rembau-Batu Pahat, Johor (197.6km); Batu Pahat-Pontian (94.7km); Johor Baharu-Melaka (206.3km); and Melaka-Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur (177.1km).

The Tour of Malaysia is a UCI sanctioned 2.2 Hors Status race and a part of the 2012-13 UCI Asia Tour calendar.
