HER left arm in a cast and bed-ridden in hospital, Mariana Mohamad has a bone to pick with sports officials as she insists that she will be able to compete in the Asian Cycling Championships road events in Putrajaya on Feb 14-18.

Minutes after Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek visited her and announced at a press conference the gravity of her injuries, the 34-year old Mariana refuted the doctor's report.

"No, I cannot be off the bike. As soon as I can, I'm going to get back on the bike and I'm going to ride in the Asian Championships," said Mariana, a mother of two, whose husband Glen Ford was against her cycling.

"The individual time trial is on  Feb 14 so there's time for me to recover. My legs are okay  so I'm going to ride."

A horrific accident during a selection race in Putrajaya on Sunday saw four national cyclists crash into a Perodua Kancil which had swerved into their path as they were travelling at high speeds of up to 60kp/h.

Mariana suffered multiple fractures to her ribs and forearm, which was also dislocated. She underwent surgery on Sunday evening and was also  treated at the Damansara Specialist Centre for torn  tendons and lacerations on various parts of her body.

Ahmad Shabery, upon being briefed by doctors at the Damansara Specialist Centre, announced a totally different scenario.

"We have asked Mariana to take her time and recover, because from what the doctors have told us, she needs three months for her injuries to recover and then up to two months of rehabilitation," said Ahmad Shabery.

Upon further consultation with National Sports Institute (NSI) CEO Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz and Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad, Ahmad Shabery said it was best that Mariana adhered to the doctor's orders.

"She shouldn't rush herself back as that might only aggravate her injuries, bringing about a longer healing process," said Ahmad Shabery.
